The Green Voices of Regent

What is our data telling us?

As part of our project's design, we tasked ourselves to collect data in a few different ways. From voice memos to google form surveys, a huge contributing factor to this project was our desire to have this work be informed by Regent Park's community and stakeholders. Below, we provide you with the voice memos we collected, and the data we derived through our google form.

What does green spaces mean to you?

Hear it from the residents on what green spaces mean to them. We encourage you to click on every voice memo to hear a different story on green spaces within Regent Park

"I feel like I am amongst the trees, the birds, butterflies... no set of cars, traffic, noise"

"there is a lot of green space in Regent Park , but there is not enough trees, not enough gardens...

"a place where you can rest, a place where you can relax..."

"something fresh where I feel free... just feel free"

"when I think about green spaces, I think about gardens, I think about the basketball court..."

Take a read of our survey data findings

In the heart of Regent Park, a vibrant tapestry of demographics weaves the fabric of community life. Throughout the neighbourhood, the stories of its residents unfold, adding depth to the rich mosaic of culture. Adults between 30-45, followed ages 19-30 cover most of the respondent’s age group. Nevertheless, a diversity of ethnicities paints the canvas of Regent Park's landscape. With over half the respondents representing ethnic groups of Black-African, Afro-Caribbean, and African-Canadian descent. Alongside them, South Asians form the second largest ethnic group within the community.

The stories of longevity and presence within the neighbourhood are represented with 60.7% of respondents living in Regent Park for over 11 years. As a result, the roots of these residents run deep, being faces that portray the community in a shared history of growth and transformation.

Being surrounded by the large urban space and living in the confines of brown bricks, the call for green spaces resonates loudly. When asked about their desires, the community's voice loudly seeks for open green spaces that can create a sanctuary amidst the concrete jungle. In addition, the desire for community gardens and parks speaks to a collective yearning for connection with nature and each other.  Recreational pursuits become evident amongst the residents, along with the opportunity for spaces that enable children to enjoy sports and their playgrounds. Overall, these spaces hold deep significance, serving as spaces of solace for cultural practices as the community gathers to mark sacred moments, from prayers during Ramadan to the celebration of Eid.

In each corner of Regent Park, each section of the neighbourhood tells a story. From the crazy streets to the peaceful green spaces, the community's desires and dreams present a portrait of resilience, unity, and boundless possibility.
